Concrete structures are often designed with an additional layer of concrete, known as the concrete cover, to protect the reinforcing steel from moisture, pollutants, chlorides and carbon dioxide that can lead to corrosion and premature deterioration. This additional concrete increases both material usage and construction costs.
When coated with Insultec, a durable waterproof membrane is formed that helps protect the concrete surface from moisture ingress and environmental contaminants. By creating this protective barrier and reducing thermal expansion and contraction, Insultec can assist in extending the service life of concrete structures. In some applications, this additional level of protection may enable engineers to consider more efficient concrete designs while maintaining long-term durability, subject to project-specific engineering requirements.
