Insultec + Bifacial Solar Panels

A High-Reflectivity Roof Coating for Solar-Optimised Buildings

What Insultec does

Insultec is a high-performance, water-based roof coating designed to reduce heat absorption, lower roof surface temperatures and improve building energy efficiency.

Because of its high reflective properties, Insultec is also a strong candidate for evaluation beneath bifacial solar panels, which generate electricity from both direct sunlight and reflected light from the roof surface below.

While Insultec is not currently certified as a solar-performance enhancer, its reflective and thermal characteristics make it suitable for structured testing in solar-integrated roofing systems.

Why Roof Reflectivity Matters

Bifacial solar panels generate power from two sides:

Front side: direct sunlight
Rear side: reflected and diffuse light from the roof or ground surface

A highly reflective roof surface may help increase the amount of usable light reaching the rear side of bifacial solar modules.

Insultec’s reflective coating may support:

  • Increased rear-side irradiance
  • Improved solar performance in hot climates
  • Lower roof surface temperatures
  • Reduced heat transfer into the building
  • Reduced cooling demand beneath solar arrays
  • Lower thermal stress on panels and mounting systems

These potential benefits must be confirmed through independent, accredited testing.

Thermal Benefits for Buildings

Insultec is engineered to reduce heat absorption at the roof surface.

By reflecting solar radiation and reducing conductive heat transfer, Insultec can help lower internal heat gain and reduce the cooling load on buildings.

This makes it especially relevant for:

  • Industrial rooftops
  • Commercial buildings
  • Warehouses
  • High-heat climates
  • Solar-ready roof systems
  • Energy-efficiency upgrades

Suitable Roof Applications

Insultec can be applied to a range of common roof substrates, including:

  • Metal roofs
  • Concrete roofs
  • Membrane roof systems

Its water-based, non-toxic and low-VOC formulation also makes it suitable for environmentally conscious building projects.

Why Test With Bifacial Solar?

Bifacial solar technology is increasingly being used in commercial and industrial rooftop applications.

The performance of these systems can be influenced by the reflectivity of the surface beneath the panels.

Insultec’s high-reflectivity and roof-cooling properties make it a logical product to evaluate beneath bifacial PV systems, particularly in hot, high-solar-intensity regions.

Testing & certification

Insultec is not currently certified as a solar-output enhancing product.

Any claims regarding increased solar generation, bifacial gain or improved PV performance must be supported by independent test results from recognised laboratories or accredited testing bodies.

A suitable test program may include:

  • Reflectance testing
  • Roof surface temperature monitoring
  • Rear-side irradiance measurement
  • PV module temperature logging
  • Energy yield comparison against an uncoated control surface
  • Durability, adhesion and weathering testing

Our position

Insultec was not originally designed as a solar-boosting product.

However, its high reflectivity, thermal-efficiency properties and compatibility with rooftop systems make it suitable for evaluation beneath bifacial solar panels.

Any future performance claims will be based solely on certified test results from accredited testing authorities.

Summary

Insultec offers a strong combination of:

  • High solar reflectivity
  • Roof temperature reduction
  • Improved building energy efficiency
  • Non-toxic, water-based formulation
  • Compatibility with commercial roof systems
  • Potential suitability beneath bifacial solar panels

Pending certified testing, Insultec may represent a valuable dual-benefit roofing solution: helping reduce building heat load while supporting the evaluation of solar-optimised roof design.
