Insultec & Basix Compliance
Helping meet NSW building energy targets
What is BASIX?
BASIX (Building Sustainability Index) is the NSW Government’s sustainability assessment
scheme.
All new homes and major renovations must meet BASIX targets for:
• Energy efficiency
• Water use
• Thermal comfort
BASIX sets whole-of-building performance targets, typically requiring 20%–50% lower
energy use compared with a benchmark home, depending on location and design.
How Insultec supports BASIX compliance
Insultec is a thermal insulation coating designed to reduce heat transfer through roofs and
external surfaces.
When applied to roofs or exposed building elements, Insultec can:
• Reduce solar heat gain
• Lower internal temperatures
• Decrease reliance on air-conditioning
• Improve thermal performance outcomes in BASIX assessments
Typical contribution to BASIX energy targets
Because BASIX is a whole-building calculation, results vary by:
• Climate zone
• Roof area and colour
• Insulation levels
• Glazing and orientation
• Overall building design
In typical residential modelling:
• Insultec can contribute to overall building energy reductions
• It may assist in achieving heating and cooling load targets
It can help offset or reduce the need for:
• Higher-spec insulation
• Expensive glazing upgrades
• Additional mechanical cooling
Example performance contribution
Typical modelling scenarios indicate:
• 10%–30% reduction in cooling load in roof-dominated buildings
• 5%–15% improvement in total building energy performance, depending on design and climate
Actual results must be verified through a BASIX or NatHERS assessment.
Suitable applications for BASIX projects
Insultec is commonly specified for:
• Metal and tile roofs
• Residential homes
• Multi-residential buildings
• Renovations requiring BASIX compliance
Compliant claim statement (for builders and marketing)
“Insultec is a thermal insulation coating that can assist in meeting BASIX heating and cooling targets by reducing roof heat gain and lowering air-conditioning demand. Actual performance is determined through project-specific BASIX or NatHERS assessments.”
Important note
BASIX results are calculated on a whole-of-building basis.
Performance outcomes will vary depending on the building design, location, and specification.
For project-specific BASIX modelling, consult a licensed BASIX or NatHERS assessor.
